After returning home with your new pet, house training him is of utmost importance. Potty training puppies can be a short course of action if you follow some basic rules for success. In addition to saving yourself aggravation and carpet soiling, the process can provide the basis of a close and loyalty-based relationship.

To begin, you must select a spot to be your puppy's "normal" place to relieve himself. Take him immediately to this spot and watch his behavior while he prepares to potty. Most dogs will sniff around, walk in circles, or pace prior to the act. By noting his actions, you'll know what to watch for indoors.

Using the same area for your pet to go potty, will help him to know what the expectation is when he is taken there. When you notice one of the signs mentioned above, immediately take him outside to prevent an accident. Some puppies should be carried because they are unable to hold it when they realize where they are being taken.

Puppies want your praise and attention. So when he successfully completes his "mission" it is mandatory that you heap him with praise. He should be overwhelmed with positive feedback, and typically some sort or food reward. These actions make him want to succeed every time he's taken to his bathroom spot.

Young puppies cannot hold their urine for very long at all - usually an hour or so is about the limit. Thus, new owners should plan for walks for every sixty to ninety minutes. At night, because they are sleeping, the time limit may stretch to be two to three hours at most. This means that a few trips outside will also be called for during the night. After returning indoors, he should be crated to prevent accidents in the home.

You must also heed when he eats and drinks or plays. After taking in some sort of refreshment, your dog should be walked relatively soon. This is also the case if your puppy did not have a successful outcome when first walked. After returning indoors, he should be crated and then returned to his outdoor spot within thirty minutes.

If an accident should happen indoors, your pet should not be punished. This confuses him and may produce more accidents and set back your progress thus far. If he is caught in the act, stop him immediately and take him to his area outside. Consistency is of utmost importance, so be sure to use praise and rewards every time. He will learn quickly that this is the only acceptable spot to relieve himself.
